On Thursday 24th January, at the monthly meeting of Morecambe and Lunesdale Constituency Labour Party, members passed a motion to urge the Lancaster City Council Labour Group to ‘show a strong and genuine commitment to the content of the motion when it comes in front of them at full council’.

The motion submitted by the Labour Councillor for Halton, Kevin Frea and seconded by the current Mayor, Labour Councillor for Bulk Ward, Andrew Kay and Green Councillors, Caroline Jackson and Tim Hamilton-Cox, calls on Lancaster City Council to declare a ‘Climate Change Emergency’, inspired by the actions of an increasing number of councils around the country and build on the commitments it has already made to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2050.

Members acknowledged that the coastal region around Morecambe Bay will be adversely affected by rising water levels due to climate change and therefore it is vital that this coastal, tidal and rural community plays it’s part in reducing carbon emissions.

Lizzi Collinge, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Morecambe and Lunesdale said “Climate Change considerations should be a fundamental part of everything we do at all levels of Government, Labour Party Policy acknowledges the urgency of the problem. Climate Change adversely affects the poorest and most vulnerable first.”

The full motion will go infront of the whole Council on Wednesday 30th January and will coincide with a debate triggered by a petition launched by Lancaster Girls Grammar school pupil, Rosie Mills
