At the last full meeting of Morecambe and Lunesdale Constituency Labour Party, a resolution sponsored by the NUT was heard and passed by the meeting.

The resolution was to write and request that Morecambe Football Club publicly dissociates itself from any planned marches and demonstrations by the Football Lads Alliance and the Democratic Football Lads Alliance, anywhere in the North West of England.

The FLA is a racist, far right organisation and any demonstration by the group is a threat to the multicultural nature of the North Lancashire community. The FLA, and it’s splinter group the Democratic Football Lad’s Alliance, claim that they are not racist groups but the evidence, as exposed in the Observer and the Times, shows otherwise and they should not be able to portray themselves as representative of football supporters.

The Premier League, to it’s credit, has issued a warning about the dangers posed by the FLA.

The FLA has moved sharply to the right since it’s initial mobilisation in London last summer in the wake of the a wave of terror attacks including the Manchester bombing. It intially claimed to be against all extremism but has moved in an increasingly Islamophobic and racist direction. The main speaker at some FLA mobilisations has been the divisive Tommy Robinson. Posts on the FLA’s ‘secret’ Facebook wall have included dreadful racism and Islamophobia and violent threats on public figures.

Given the proud tradition of Morecambe FC in opposing racism in football and its support of Show Racism the Red Card we are sure that the club is opposed to racists using football as an excuse to promote their beliefs on the streets of our cities. We would invite the club to take the next step and to publicly dissociate itself from any marches or other FLA activities.
