Local Labour representatives are concerned that the ‘new’ nuclear deal trumpeted by the Government is merely a repackaging of old commitments and won’t support the Heysham nuclear site. Lizzi Collinge, County Councillor and Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Morecambe and Lunesdale, said:

“I want to see a thriving nuclear sector, run for the public good and contributing to the fight against climate change. The Heysham plants are a fantastic, high skilled employer which need to be supported by the Government. Unfortunately, like so much of the Government’s industrial strategy, this sector deal is nothing more than a repackaging of existing policies; of the £200 million headline only 5% represents new government funding.

“Large scale low and zero carbon energy provision is vital to prevent the devastating effects of climate change, such as flooding.

“The Government also promises that the deal will increase gender equality in the sector. After touring the Heysham site, I know they have done a great job of increasing equality and I hope other nuclear employers learn from their success.”

Labour also criticised the Government’s environmental record. Shadow Cabinet Minister Rebecca Long Bailey MP said:

“In a week when the Government refused to back the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, this meagre support for low carbon energy is particularly disappointing and will do nothing to improve the Conservatives’ green record.

“In contrast, Labour has placed tackling climate change at the heart of our industrial strategy to radically transform our economy for the many not the few, committing at the general election to 60 per cent of energy from low carbon and renewable sources by 2030’’
