Carnforth Branch

Carnforth Branch Labour Party is made up of members and supporters who believe in, and work for, a fairer society. We think it an outrage that in one of the richest countries in the world a million of our fellow citizens have to rely on food banks, that there are cuts to welfare benefits, that so many can no longer afford adequate housing and that there are damaging cuts to our services and communities.

We want to expose the harm done when libraries close, bus services are stopped, youth centres scrapped and the NHS is starved of money. Alongside this many large multinational companies seem able to avoid paying their share of tax, and directors pay themselves obscene amounts. This is not the society we want. We have no doubt that there are millions like us who believe in a more compassionate society, demonstrating concern for others, and one where we safeguard the environment.

The branch is a part of the Morecambe and Lunesdale parliamentary constituency and contributes to the Labour movement in the area. Carnforth branch includes the town of Carnforth as well as surrounding villages: Bolton-le-Sands in the South and villages stretching to the Cumbria and Yorkshire borders (Halton, Over Kellet, Warton, Yealand, Silverdale, Hornby, Melling, Wennington, Gressingham Arkholme and Whittington). It is essential that we represent the interests both of Carnforth and the rural areas, to ensure that Lancaster does not take priority, especially when faced with government cuts.

We hold 6 meetings per year for members, as well as public meetings. In addition we meet socially and hold some afternoon events for people who are not able to get to evening meetings. Our aim is to talk to people in our community about the reasons we want to see changes in the priorities of the government. To that end we hold a stall in Carnforth market place on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
