10th February Second junior doctors strike day

Junior Doctors Strike

Kevin Frea, Colin Hartley, Margaret Pattison and Brian Penney all from Morecambe & Lunesdale CLP joined the striking doctors on the picket line outside the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. Passing pedestrians were clearly appreciative of the doctors and many took leaflets and stick on labels. Those on the picket line were also rewarded with many toots of support from vehicles in the busy rush hour traffic.

So what’s it all about?

The Tory Government is planning to impose a new contract on the doctors. The effect of this is those hours which are regarded as ‘normal’ working will be increased. For this doctors will get a 11% pay rise BUT their allowances for working excess hours will be removed meaning that some will actually have a pay cut!

The Government says it wants a 7 day NHS. Well, that’s what we’ve got now – emergency and in-patient care is provided 365 days a year. What the Tories are trying to do is to provide non emergency care at weekends by making the doctors work longer hours (i.e. on the cheap).

Do you want a tired doctor treating you at the end of a 16 hour shift? The only safe way to provide a full range of cover at weekends is to make more staff and resources available – but the Tories won’t do this.

We shouldn’t allow patients and staff to be put at risk by these changes. Support the doctors.

The Tories can’t be trusted with our NHS!

Here a Junior Doctor gives an excellent over view of the strike
